Legendary hurdler Hurricane Fly passes away at age 22 at Irish National Stud

Hurricane Fly, widely regarded as one of the modern era's top hurdlers, died at the Irish National Stud in County Kildare at 22. The gelded son of Montjeu won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2011 and 2013 and amassed 22 Grade One victories from 32 starts, including five straight Leopardstown Champion Hurdles from 2011 to 2015. In retirement he shared the stud with former stars like Beef Or Salmon, Faugheen and Rite Of Passage.

Trainer Willie Mullins called him a legend, noting his love of battle, while jockey Ruby Walsh described him as the best hurdler he ever rode, highlighting his accuracy and bravery. Mullins also offered condolences to longtime groom Gail Carlisle and referenced the recent passing of co-owner Frank Boyd and the families of George Creighton.
