Legislator urges Hong Kong to deepen airport ties with Greater Bay Area
Legislative Council member Kenneth Fok called for stronger cooperation with the Greater Bay Area to boost Hong Kong International Airport’s passenger traffic.
Kenneth Fok, representing the G19 group of Legislative Council members, urged the Hong Kong government to expand cooperation with the Greater Bay Area in order to revive passenger volumes at Hong Kong International Airport. He noted that the airport’s traffic remains below pre-pandemic figures and trails regional rivals such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Fok suggested formal agreements with mainland airports and a more proactive global marketing strategy to attract overseas airlines.
He argued that these initiatives require direct government-to-government negotiations and a more aggressive policy stance. The call was made during a Monday session where the G19 bloc presented a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening the city’s status as an international aviation hub.
Why it matters
Improved regional airport cooperation could help Hong Kong regain its competitive edge in Asian air travel.
