Les Forges de Tarbes placed under judicial restructuring amid defense concerns
The French artillery shell manufacturer Les Forges de Tarbes has been placed in judicial restructuring, opening the way for a new owner.
Les Forges de Tarbes, France's leading producer of artillery shell bodies used by the Ukrainian army, was placed in judicial restructuring following a request by its owner Europlasma. The restructuring aims to attract a buyer for the strategically important defense facility, which currently employs roughly sixty staff and manufactures 155 mm shells for Caesar cannons supplied to Ukraine. Europlasma, which acquired the site in 2021, had pledged to modernise the plant and raise output to 15 000 pieces per month by 2025.
The DGA has referred the case to the Tarbes prosecutor, citing recent managerial choices that appear to have hastened the firm's financial troubles. Workers have expressed disappointment over unfulfilled investment commitments and poor communication, calling for state intervention. Regional officials have warned that the plant must meet equipment compliance deadlines or face shutdown.
Why it matters
The restructuring threatens a key European defense supplier and could affect ammunition supplies to Ukraine.
