LFI deputy urges prosecutor after video shows police dog used on young man in Rillieux-la-Pape
A video of a municipal police dog being deployed against a young man in Rillieux-la-Pape prompted an LFI deputy to refer the case to the prosecutor. The mayor defended the officers’ actions.
A video posted by Abdelkader Lahmar captures a municipal police team, including a dog handler, confronting a young man in a grey tracksuit in Rillieux-la-Pape. The dog, kept muzzled and on a leash, is shown as officers physically restrain the youth, who allegedly did not pose an immediate danger. An LFI deputy denounced the handling as irresponsible and has filed a complaint with the prosecutor under article 40 of the criminal procedure code, also questioning the chain of command for the dog.
Mayor Alexandre Vincendet responded, stating that the dog remained muzzled throughout and that the individual refused to lie down despite verbal orders, asserting that any review must be grounded in facts rather than political motives. He warned that constant criticism of police fuels distrust and tension. The article also notes a prior incident in March where a municipal police dog bit a resident’s neck, resulting in eight days of sick leave and a complaint for attempted murder, while the dog handler filed a counter-complaint for violence.
Why it matters
The case raises concerns about police use of dogs and political oversight of law-enforcement tactics.
