LG Chem and Volkswagen sign MOU to develop eco-friendly vehicle plastics

LG Chem Ltd., South Korea's leading chemical producer, announced a memorandum of understanding with Volkswagen Group to co-develop sustainable mobility materials. The collaboration will focus on next-generation ABS and engineering plastics aimed at reducing vehicle weight and enhancing performance. LG Chem will leverage its expertise in high-value, eco-friendly polymers, including its post-consumer recycled (PCR) ABS, which it first introduced in 2020.

Under the agreement, both companies will seek cost-efficient material solutions for Volkswagen's major brands, targeting interior and exterior components. LG Chem cited its global ABS production capacity of 2.35 million metric tons as a foundation for the joint effort. Senior Vice President Kim Sang-min said the partnership aims to set new milestones for sustainable growth.
