LG monitors accused of installing ad-driven software on PCs

A recent investigation revealed that some LG monitors silently install an application named LG Monitor App Installer on PCs through Windows Update, beginning in 2024. The software displays advertisements, including McAfee pop-ups, and promotes LG utilities such as LG Switch and LG Dual Controller. LG describes the program as a way to provide customers with monitor-related features, yet the app’s store page indicates it can use all system resources and access the internet.

After public outcry, Microsoft compelled LG to eliminate the McAfee ads, but the method of installing ad-laden software on third-party devices remains troubling. LG’s linked privacy notice asserts that neither the app nor its monitor applications collect, use, store, or share personal data, promising updates if future versions handle personal information. Critics argue that the lack of transparent policies and the forced installation raise significant privacy concerns.
