Liberal Democrat leader calls blocking Nigel Farage a moral duty amid crypto funding scandal

At the Liberal Democrat conference, Sir Ed Davey declared that preventing Nigel Farage from reaching Downing Street is a moral responsibility and the most critical challenge of his political career. He highlighted a £72 million donation to the Reform Party from cryptocurrency billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, describing it as a deep threat to British politics. Davey pledged that the Liberal Democrats would serve as a “firewall” against Reform, which he said is increasingly openly racist and divisive.

He also warned that the new foreign-donor cap of £100,000, introduced earlier this year, must be enforced to stop similar inflows. Meanwhile, Electoral Commission chair Vijay Rangarajan said a comprehensive review of spending limits and reporting requirements will be undertaken to restore public confidence. In addition to the funding concerns, Davey urged the prime minister to cut fuel duty by 10 p per litre until Christmas and to slash bus fares to £1 and rail fares by 10 %.
