Liberal Democrat newcomer Tom Gordon rebukes Ed Davey over triple-lock rhetoric

New Lib Dem MP Tom Gordon criticised Ed Davey’s claim that the pension triple-lock benefits future generations, calling the argument insulting to millennials.

During a recent broadcast of the Today Programme, Liberal Democrat MP Tom Gordon, the party’s only new representative from Yorkshire, attacked Ed Davey’s defence of the pension triple-lock, labeling the claim that it helps millennials as both absurd and offensive. Gordon contended that the measure, which raises pensions above inflation, primarily benefits affluent retirees rather than addressing poverty among children or working-age adults.

He proposed redirecting the extra money to universal free personal care, a policy that would disproportionately aid older people. Gordon also warned that the narrative of intergenerational fairness is misleading, noting that his generation faces housing unaffordability, high taxes and lingering student-loan debt. His remarks reflect broader unease at the party conference, where Davey’s popularity appears to be waning among colleagues.
