Libs of TikTok posts trigger public-sector firings and multi-million dollar settlements

Posts by the Libs of TikTok account have led to the dismissal of several government employees, who later secured settlements exceeding $4 million in total.

Libs of TikTok, an X account boasting 4.7 million followers, shifted its focus to exposing public employees whose remarks it considered harmful, prompting costly terminations and legal battles. Among those named were a Ball State University administrator, a University of Tennessee anthropology professor, a Florida Fish and Wildlife biologist, and a retired police officer; each was dismissed after comments celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk were shared.

The former employees filed lawsuits alleging violations of free-speech rights and have collectively received settlements exceeding $4.1 million. A separate X user launched the Libs of Settlements account to catalog these payouts, initially concentrating on Kirk-related dismissals but intending to broaden its scope. The account’s posts include screenshots of the original comments and calls from influencers urging the terminations.

Estimates suggest the Libs of TikTok phenomenon may cost taxpayers up to $5 million by year-end. Neither the Libs of TikTok operator nor the new settlement-tracking account responded to interview requests.
