Libyan army chief Sandam Haftar lands in Cairo amid Egypt's rejection of Turkey-Libya pact

Libyan General Staff deputy chief Sandam Haftar arrived in Cairo for an official visit shortly after Libya's parliament ratified the Turkey-Libya memorandum, which Egypt says has no legal effect.

On Sunday, Sandam Haftar, deputy chief of the Libyan Army's General Staff and son of the late Khalifa Haftar, arrived in Cairo on what officials described as an official visit. His arrival follows the recent approval of the Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum by the Libyan parliament, a move that has drawn fierce criticism abroad and provoked a hostile reaction from Greece's foreign ministry. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asserted that the agreement is invalid and holds no legal weight for Egypt, citing violations of its maritime boundaries.

Foreign Minister Banatr Abdellati restated this position on Friday during a meeting in Istanbul with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan. No further information about the discussions held in Cairo has been released, and Egyptian media report that the content of the talks remains undisclosed.

Why it matters

The visit highlights escalating diplomatic tensions over a contested maritime deal that could affect regional security and trade routes.
