Libyan authorities detain pilot and co-pilot after drunken runway overrun and fire
Libyan prosecutors say the pilot and co-pilot were intoxicated when their Cessna left the runway and burned at Misrata airport, and both have been placed in custody.
On Monday, a Turkish-registered Cessna attempted to land at Misrata International Airport in north-west Libya without passengers. The aircraft departed the runway and caught fire, leaving the cockpit destroyed while the rest of the plane was largely consumed by flames. Libyan prosecutors announced that the pilot, identified as a German national, and the co-pilot, a Turkish national, were operating the aircraft while intoxicated, endangering the airport and its users.
Both pilots, along with a Turkish cabin crew member, have been placed in provisional detention as the investigation continues. The findings were based on wreckage analysis, air-traffic control data, and technician testimonies. a broadcaster at one outlet al-Ahrar provided video evidence of the charred wreckage. Authorities have not disclosed the exact nationalities beyond the crew details.
