Liège mayor imposes ban on gatherings of more than three people amid student unrest
Student protests erupted in Liège, with hundreds of pupils and university students demonstrating against education reforms and transport fare increases, and some participants vandalising shops, breaking bus shelter windows and setting a shelter on fire. Police responded with tear‑gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, and several officers were injured. Following the unrest, Mayor Willy Demeyer issued a directive that bans public gatherings of more than three individuals. Since the order began, police have logged 194 arrests, including 158 administrative detentions and 36 judicial arrests, with minors accounting for 114 of those cases, and 43 officers have been injured while enforcing the measure.
Why it matters
The restriction curtails public assembly in Liège and has already resulted in numerous arrests and injuries to police officers.
