Lifestyle choices outweigh genetics in determining the pace of aging
A large study found that daily habits explain about 17% of aging differences, while genetics account for only around 2%.
Scientists conducting a broad investigation reported that personal habits drive the majority of variation in how quickly people age, contributing about 17% versus just 2% from inherited traits. This suggests lifestyle influences are roughly eightfold more powerful than a favorable gene set. Among the examined factors, only ethnic background and height reached in childhood were fixed, leaving 23 modifiable elements.
The most detrimental behaviors identified were tobacco use, lack of social connections, sedentary living, persistent sleep disturbances, and both physical and emotional fatigue. Additionally, researchers highlighted socioeconomic aspects such as income level and housing quality as amplifiers of biological vulnerability. The authors stress that most risks are adjustable, offering opportunities to delay premature aging through changes in environment and daily routines.
