Limerick teen receives six-month detention for a series of car thefts
A 15-year-old from Limerick was sentenced to six months in detention for seven car thefts identified through social-media footage and CCTV.
In Ennis District Court, a Limerick teenager, now 15, was sentenced by Judge Adrian Harris to six months’ detention at Oberstown Detention Facility for a string of seven car thefts committed in 2024 and early 2025. The offenses spanned Limerick, Clare and Tipperary and were uncovered through footage posted on TikTok, Snapchat and other open-source platforms, as well as CCTV and DNA matches. The teen, who was 13 when the crimes occurred, pleaded guilty and will remain under supervision by the Probation Service for six months after release.
Sgt Shane Graham highlighted a high likelihood of reoffending and noted that each time the youth has been out of custody, new offenses have emerged. The judge warned that further breaches would lead to more court appearances, and the teenager, represented by solicitor Shiofra Hassett, thanked the court via video link.
