Lisbon streets see housing protesters march downtown
On Saturday housing activists marched from Marquês de Pombal to Rossio Square, unfurling a banner that read “We have no home, so we set up tents!” to highlight the housing crisis. Police from the Public Security Police were on the streets and specialist units were on standby as the demonstration proceeded. After a police raid cleared 228 tents and detained 55 people, activists re‑entered Rossio, dismantled any remaining tents and spent the night on the pavement with blankets and sleeping bags.
The Public Security Police instructed that any new tents be removed before 7 a.m., a directive the protesters followed, and a new demonstration has been announced for the coming Saturday. Court appearances for the detained protesters have been delayed until later in the week.
