Lisbon to install brand-new funicular after 2025 cable disaster
Lisbon authorities announced plans to replace the historic Gloria funicular, which collapsed in September 2025, killing 16 people.
Following the September 2025 accident on the 140-year-old Gloria funicular that resulted in 16 deaths, Lisbon officials revealed a plan to replace the line rather than rebuild it. The municipal Carris company will launch a tender for a new funicular in early 2027, aiming for operation by 2029. Carris president Rui Pedro Gaspar Lopo emphasized that the replacement will be a fresh installation, not a reconstruction of the former tourist attraction.
Deputy city council head Goncalo Reis added that the project will preserve the historic location while delivering a robust, modern solution. The tragedy also led to the shutdown of the city's other two funiculars pending safety reviews.
