Lithuania expands Šiauliai air base to host up to 750 NATO personnel

Lithuania will enlarge its Šiauliai air base so it can accommodate between 500 and 750 NATO troops on a rotating basis, the Defence Ministry said.

Lithuania's Defence Ministry revealed that the Šiauliai air base will be expanded to support a rotational deployment of 500 to 750 NATO troops. Economic projections indicate that a 500-troop mission could bring in approximately €65.5 million each year, compared with the €24.6 million generated by the existing 200-troop rotation. The ministry also plans to adapt the facility for fifth-generation fighter aircraft by the second half of 2028.

According to Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas, the infrastructure investment strengthens national defence while delivering tangible economic benefits. Each NATO soldier is estimated to spend €2,000-€2,300 per month, mainly on accommodation and catering, with the remainder covering transport, fuel, leisure and other services. A portion of the spending supports Lithuanian companies, and every five to ten troops could create one or two additional local jobs.

Why it matters

The upgrade boosts NATO's presence in the region and promises significant economic gains for Lithuania.
