Littoral Combat Ship project lags, risking handover of first vessel

The National Audit Department reported that the LCS programme is running about 7.55 % behind schedule, endangering the planned handover of LCS 1.

According to a statement accompanying the Auditor General’s Report (LKAN) 2/2026, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme is approximately 7.55 % behind its schedule, with delays measured between 30 and 108 days as of June 25, 2026. These setbacks jeopardize the physical handover of the first ship, LCS 1, originally slated for August 26, 2026 and now pushed to December 26, 2026, because essential training and weapons systems are not yet in place.

Full operational readiness hinges on a supplementary contract that is only expected to conclude in December 2035, far beyond the main contract’s April 25, 2030 deadline. The audit, prompted by a Public Accounts Committee recommendation, also highlighted that the delayed handover will affect the timelines for LCS 2 through LCS 5. The National Audit Department urged the Ministry of Defence to devise a realistic recovery plan, clarify conditional acceptance terms, and strengthen project monitoring with designated officers and clear deadlines.

How the sides frame it

HIGH AGREEMENT

Both centrist and right-leaning coverage convey the same audit findings about a 7.55% schedule delay, postponed handover dates, and delayed operational readiness, with no substantive differences.

CENTER

Centrist coverage presents the audit as exposing a schedule lag that threatens the handover and full capability of the first Littoral Combat Ship.

RIGHT

Right-leaning coverage frames the audit as flagging a delay that endangers the ship’s handover and operational readiness.

The right emphasises

  • 7.55% delay (30-108 days)
  • hand-over dates of Aug 26 2026 and Dec 26 2026 at risk
  • operational readiness dependent on a supplementary contract due Dec 2035
