LIV Golf scrubs Michigan team championship as funding doubts threaten tour's future
LIV Golf announced the cancellation of its season-ending team championship in Michigan, raising concerns the league may cease operations.
LIV Golf officially called off its August 27-30 team championship at The Cardinal at St. John's in Plymouth, Michigan, marking the latest indication that the tour could soon shut down. The decision follows the Public Investment Fund’s April announcement that it will cease funding the league after the 2026 season, leaving organizers to seek alternative capital. Tickets remained on sale until August 12, but were removed the next day without clarification on refunds.
The league’s Indianapolis event, scheduled for August 20-23 at The Club at Chatham Hills, will now conclude the 2026 season, with individual play and team scores still counting toward the final team champion. CEO Scot O'Neil said a new lead investor has been secured and players will become majority equity holders, while Ian Poulter warned the tour must raise $300 million by early September. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp indicated openness to reinstating former LIV players, though it is not a priority for the PGA Tour’s upcoming schedule.
Why it matters
The cancellation underscores LIV Golf's financial instability and the risk of the league disappearing from professional golf.
