Liverpool sacks Slot, appoints Iraola as club faces unresolved squad and spending woes

Liverpool dismissed Arne Slot and installed Andoni Iraola, inheriting a costly but incomplete squad and lingering performance problems.

Liverpool’s campaign faltered when Arne Slot was unexpectedly sacked and Andoni Iraola, fresh from an unbeaten run with Bournemouth, was appointed manager. Despite a record £450 million outlay on arrivals such as Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and the £125 million striker Alexander Isak, the squad remains thin in several positions and has conceded a high number of goals. Defensive issues have been amplified by the departures of Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, while the attack lacks a clear successor to Mohamed Salah, with Isak managing only four goals.

New minority ownership involving Jeff Bezos has not changed the transfer budget, and recent signings like Ronald Araujo and Milos Kerkez must adapt to Iraola’s wing-centric approach. Dominik Szoboszlai has emerged as a versatile key player, but the club must quickly address its shortcomings to avoid a prolonged post-Klopp slump.

Why it matters

Liverpool's managerial shift and huge spending raise questions about the club's future competitiveness.
