Living with Lipedema: One Floridian’s Diet, Exercise and Care Routine

Elery Johnson, a 36-year-old mother from Florida, explains how anti-inflammatory eating, low-impact workouts and lymphatic self-care help her manage lipedema.

Elery Johnson grew up on Florida’s Treasure Coast and began noticing enlarged, puffy legs during early puberty, later being labeled with “cankles” by peers. After a vascular surgeon in Utah identified her symptoms as lipedema—a progressive, hormone-sensitive disorder—she pursued conservative treatment, including varicose-vein procedures that eased some swelling but did not address the underlying fat deposits. To control inflammation, Johnson avoids sugar, white bread, and limits dairy, favoring eggs, Greek yogurt, protein shakes, salads, fish, grilled chicken, fruits and vegetables while staying well-hydrated.

She swapped high-intensity CrossFit for low-impact activities such as walking, stationary biking, rebounding and occasional yoga, adding leg-focused strength training to lessen heaviness. Daily dry brushing, brief cold showers on her legs and self-performed lymphatic massage further aid fluid movement. Though she has not yet pursued lipedema-specific liposuction, she reports fewer flare-ups and improved leg comfort from this comprehensive routine.
