Liz Truss imagines Mars launches and a thriving Scotland in new book

In her latest book, former prime minister Liz Truss claims that staying in office would have led Britain to launch Mars missions and revitalize Scotland’s economy.

Liz Truss’s new book, *Bank Job: A Short Book on How the Bank of England Broke the Bond Market and Brought Down the Government*, contains a futuristic scenario in which Britain, under her continued leadership, would have launched several missions to Mars from a domestic space port. The final chapter, titled “2040,” portrays a Britain that has shed the “socialist SNP” in Scotland, allowing tax-cut-driven industrial zones to flourish, with technology firms relocating from Dublin, Texas and Singapore and Aberdeen experiencing a resurgence.

Truss also asserts that the post-1997 settlement failed, citing admissions from former Labour leaders Blair, Brown, and a brief Andy Burnham premiership, as well as an alleged US bailout for Angela Rayner. Early reviews have been scathing, describing the book as one of the most deranged reads. The narrative blends political speculation with grandiose space ambitions, drawing sharp criticism for its lack of realism.

Why it matters

The book reveals how a former leader frames her legacy, influencing public perception of past policies and future aspirations.
