LNG projected to dominate two-thirds of global gas trade by 2055
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum says liquefied natural gas will account for 65% of worldwide gas trade by 2055, with exports more than doubling.
The Gas Exporting Countries Forum is set to meet in Moscow on Oct 27, where Secretary General Philip Mshelbila outlined a long-term outlook for natural gas. He projected that total global gas trade will increase from 1,211 billion cubic metres in 2024 to 1,767 billion cubic metres by 2055, a rise of 46%. LNG is slated to lead this expansion, with export volumes expected to exceed 837 million tonnes, more than twice today’s level.
Consequently, LNG’s share of internationally traded gas would grow from 46% to 65%. The figures were presented on the eve of the GECF summit, highlighting the forum’s confidence in LNG’s future role.
Why it matters
The shift toward LNG reshapes global energy markets and could affect pricing, supply security, and investment decisions worldwide.
