Local MP calls for restoring Fertő lake beach and supporting nearby businesses

During a press event at the Liszt Center, Sopron MP Hallerné Nagy Anikó criticized the previous NER-led project for depriving both beachgoers and local entrepreneurs of income, and demanded the lake’s return by next summer. State Secretary Szemerey Samu explained the government’s intent to redevelop the abandoned, partially concrete-filled Fertő shoreline, with architect Tima Zoltán presenting a three-part plan covering the former beach, a northern dock lacking utilities, and a southern sailing marina.

The redesign calls for a temporary pop-up beach, parking for 350 cars, a new access road, and possible biomedicine facilities, pending funding. Environmental scientist Rodics Katalin of Greenpeace highlighted the area’s status within a national park and the priority of nature protection. The project, originally financed with over 12 billion forints and stalled since 2022, aims for a partial opening in summer 2027 and full construction to begin in 2028.
