Local smog forces Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay to halt classroom sessions

Rising air pollution from local sources pushed four Metro Cebu cities to cancel in-person classes on Monday, shifting to online learning.

Air quality in Metro Cebu deteriorated to an AQI of 180, classified as very unhealthy, prompting officials in Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay to suspend face-to-face schooling. Mayor Nestor Archival ordered all public and private schools in Cebu City to move to asynchronous instruction for the day. The decision was taken on Sunday after reports of worsening local emissions, not the trans-boundary haze from Indonesia.

Why it matters

Poor air quality endangers health and disrupts education for thousands of students in Metro Cebu.
