Localized curfews imposed in Lille and four Nord towns after weekend unrest

Authorities will enforce 8 p.m.-6 a.m. curfews on Monday and Tuesday in parts of Lille and four other Nord communes following recent riots.

The French government has ordered night-time curfews from 20 hours to 6 hours in selected districts of Lille and four other municipalities in the Nord department for Monday and Tuesday, as a response to urban violence over the weekend. The prefecture du Nord is finalising the exact boundaries, while the interior ministry (Matignon) confirmed the move. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu requested the localized curfews to safeguard commercial areas after reports of looting and clashes.

Mayor Anne-Lise Dufour-Tonini of Denain initially announced a city-wide curfew but revised it on Monday to apply only to central neighborhoods and solely to minors without adult supervision. In nearby Coulaines, mayor Christophe Rouillon also introduced a curfew for unaccompanied minors starting at 23 hours on Monday. Additionally, the prefect of Guadeloupe imposed a minor-only curfew in Pointe-à-Pitre and Les Abymes after related unrest linked to student and yellow-vest protests.

Why it matters

The curfews aim to curb further violence and protect businesses, directly affecting daily life for residents in the affected areas.
