Lockheed Martin rolls out PAC-3 Edge interceptor to tackle hypersonic threats
Lockheed Martin introduced the PAC-3 Edge, a new Patriot interceptor aimed at countering hypersonic missiles and other advanced threats.
Lockheed Martin unveiled the PAC-3 Edge, a next-generation Patriot interceptor intended to engage hypersonic and other sophisticated missile threats. The system incorporates a new seeker, upgraded flight-control software and a multi-pulse rocket motor built by Northrop Grumman, boosting performance at longer ranges and higher altitudes. Developed under the U.S. Army’s Future Interceptor programme, the contractor targets flight tests in 2027 and operational deployment by 2031.
Pricing is expected to be comparable to the existing PAC-3 MSE missile. The rollout coincides with a massive production boost, as the Army recently awarded Lockheed a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to raise annual Patriot interceptor output from roughly 600 to 2,000 units, supporting both U.S. forces and allies.
Why it matters
The new interceptor strengthens U.S. and allied defenses against fast, maneuverable hypersonic weapons.
