Lockheed Martin unveils new AIM-260 air-to-air missile and defense production deal

Lockheed Martin revealed details of its ninth-generation air-to-air missile, the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, created to address the growing long-range aerial threat from China. The missile promises longer reach and higher kill probability than current U.S. weapons and is intended for integration on stealth platforms such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Tim Cahill, president of the Missiles and Fire Control division, called the system a key element of one outlet air-superiority, noting that secrecy had previously limited public comments.

The firm also announced a new agreement with the Department of Defense to accelerate production as the Pentagon rebuilds its ammunition stockpiles. Australia has indicated it will acquire the JATM under a multi-year contract, though specific unit costs were not disclosed. Lockheed will fund the necessary investment to expand its production capacity under the deal.
