Log Cabin Republicans drop transgender advocacy to focus solely on LGB issues
The Log Cabin Republicans voted to eliminate transgender matters from their platform, redefining themselves as an LGB-only group.
The Log Cabin Republicans announced that their board has voted to remove transgender advocacy from their agenda, rebranding the organization as an LGB-focused entity. Ross Hemminger, the group's president, argued that the transgender movement now centers on minors, promoting policies like gender-identity education in schools, inclusion of biological men in women's sports, and gender-reassignment treatments for youths, which he says diverge from the group's original mission.
Consequently, the organization will limit its work to issues of sexual orientation, including marriage equality, adoption rights, open military service, equal legal treatment and religious freedom. Hemminger emphasized that this shift reaffirms the group's core principles and will not affect its open-membership policy for conservatives. The Log Cabin Republicans previously supported President Trump in both the 2020 and 2024 presidential races after initially withholding endorsement in 2016.
Why it matters
The change signals a major realignment within a leading GOP LGBTQ group, affecting its advocacy priorities and political influence.
