London-based Irish-New Zealand couple mourned after fatal jacuzzi accident in Valencia

Irish resident Thomasina Tobin and her New Zealand husband Patrick Tobin died of cardiac arrest in a Valencia villa jacuzzi, prompting a funeral mass in Ballintra.

Thomasina Tobin, an Irish citizen, and her New Zealand husband Patrick Tobin, who lived in London, died in a jacuzzi at a rented villa in Cullera, Valencia, after their teenage children Rhea and Seamus found them on the afternoon of August 25. Medical examinations concluded that both suffered cardiac arrest, with investigators pointing to a possible suction-flow defect in the hot tub. The couple’s joint funeral Mass took place on Friday morning in Ballintra, Ireland, where Reverend Patrick McGinn called them “much-loved parents” and said their loss leaves an “immeasurable void.”

During the service, Thomasina’s brother John thanked attendees for their support, and mourners presented gifts including photographs, a hard-hat and a pounamu stone from New Zealand. The tragedy has drawn condolences from relatives and friends across both countries.

Why it matters

The death underscores safety risks of jacuzzi systems and the emotional impact on transnational families.
