London City Lionesses secure record-breaking Nike front-of-shirt deal
London City Lionesses owner Michelle Kang says the club's new Nike shirt sponsorship is the biggest ever for a women-only team, surpassing the $4 million deal announced for the future Atlanta NWSL franchise.
Michelle Kang announced that London City Lionesses have finalized a shirt sponsorship with Nike that sets a new benchmark for women-only clubs, outstripping the roughly $4 million agreement secured for the future Atlanta NWSL franchise. The club has recently bolstered its roster by adding two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, Barcelona defender Mapi Leon, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps and Lyon winger Kadidiatou Diani.
Kang stressed that the partnership represents a serious commercial commitment, not a charitable gesture, and reflects growing confidence in the women's game. London City is the sole independent women's club in England’s top tier, while other WSL teams share sponsors with their men’s sides. The team will open the season against Manchester United at the Copperjax Community Stadium in Bromley, where more than 5,400 tickets have already been sold. Kang, who also owns Lyon and Washington Spirit, reiterated her long-term goal of leading the club to the summit of the sport.
Why it matters
The deal signals increasing commercial investment in women's football and could raise financial standards for independent clubs.
