London Mayor Sadiq Khan to Join the House of Lords After Years of Criticism

Sadiq Khan, now in his third term as Mayor of London, will be formally introduced to the House of Lords on Tuesday, receiving the title Lord Khan. In his remarks, he reflected on his personal journey from a council estate to the mayoralty and cited successes like universal free school meals, air-quality improvements, and transport projects. The peerage was part of a batch of 26 honours awarded after Sir Keir Starmer’s departure from No 10, with Labour colleagues lauding his crime-reduction record and infrastructure delivery.

The move contrasts with Khan’s 2022 statement that the Lords should be abolished, prompting criticism on social media. While he remains mayor, he has not yet decided whether to seek a fourth term, with the deadline to announce a candidacy set for May 4, 2027. Potential challengers for the 2028 mayoral race include Laila Cunningham, James Cleverly, Dawn Butler and David Lammy.
