London opens pioneering genomics lab to boost personalised cancer care for NHS patients
The Royal Marsden Centre for Cancer Genomics has opened in London, offering AI-driven composite biomarker testing to tailor treatments for NHS cancer patients.
The Royal Marsden Centre for Cancer Genomics, the first UK lab of its kind, began operations in London to provide composite biomarker testing that merges molecular data with AI analysis. Scientists aim to replace one outlet single-test model with a system that tracks multiple biomarkers such as DNA, RNA and proteins throughout treatment, producing a score that guides therapy choices. The centre will also evaluate emerging genomic technologies, including circulating tumour DNA blood tests that can spot cancer recurrence before symptoms appear.
Clinical director Angela George highlighted the potential for more patients to access personalised treatment options and treatment breaks based on real-time tumour monitoring. Patients like Ms Nangle, enrolled in the TRAK-ER trial, will benefit from quarterly blood tests that offer early warning of disease return and greater reassurance about their health status.
Why it matters
It introduces AI-enhanced diagnostics that could make cancer treatment more precise and less invasive for NHS patients.
