London's Rough-Sleepers Face Rising Death Toll, Near 1,900 Lost in 13 Years

An estimated 151 homeless individuals died in London last year, bringing the capital's 13-year death total to almost 1,900.

Recent statistics reveal that 151 homeless people died in London last year, whether sleeping on the streets or staying in emergency accommodation. This pushes the capital’s cumulative death count for rough sleepers to nearly 1,900 over the past 13 years. Between 2020 and 2025, 820 deaths were recorded in London, compared with 665 in the preceding five-year period.

London tops England’s totals, with the North West and South East trailing, while the North West records the highest per-capita death rate. Accidents were the leading cause of death each year, responsible for about 39% of all homeless fatalities nationwide, and intentional self-harm, liver disease and ischaemic heart disease followed. Men accounted for more than 80% of the deaths, with average ages of 47.3 for men and 43.2 for women.
