A recent Queen Mary University study finds that London’s ultra-low emission zone has markedly improved children’s lung health and reduced air-pollution-related deaths.
A new independent study by Queen Mary University of London followed more than 3,400 children in London and Luton, revealing that nitrogen-dioxide concentrations declined at double the rate in London, and lung function measurements after five years showed London youngsters matching those in cleaner-air Luton.
Clinically impaired lung function among London children fell from 14% to 9% during the study period. Earlier research from Imperial College estimated a 40% reduction in air-pollution-related deaths between 2019 and 2024, while King’s College warned that without Ulez it would have taken nearly two centuries to meet legal NO2 limits.
