Long Island police dismantle weekend street takeover, arrest 15 drivers

Suffolk County police halted a midnight street takeover in Medford, arresting 15 participants and impounding seven vehicles.

The Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force moved in just after midnight on Saturday to stop a large-scale street takeover in Medford, where drivers were drag-racing, doing donuts and other stunts on Woodside Avenue. Police had been monitoring the group since Friday and had already prevented similar gatherings in Islip and Patchogue. In Medford, officers arrested 15 participants, including five 18-year-olds, and confiscated seven vehicles.

The arrested individuals included eight residents of Nassau County, four from Suffolk County, and three from New York City. Photos released by police showed smoke from a vehicle performing donuts. Multiple traffic violations were also cited.

Why it matters

The arrests demonstrate law-enforcement efforts to curb dangerous street racing that endangers public safety.
