Long-serving Agriculture Minister Luis Planas Announces Exit Ahead of Election
Luis Planas held his final Moncloa press briefing, signalling his departure from the government before the upcoming election.
Luis Planas, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister who has served since June 2018, delivered what appears to be his final Moncloa press briefing, indicating his intention to leave the cabinet before the next election. He explained that he will not appear on any PSOE list, describing the decision as strictly personal, and hinted at a bid for the FAO leadership when the organization elects its head in June 2027. Planas pledged to stay on until the end of the year to finish important EU talks on the Common Agricultural Policy and fisheries policy.
His exit joins recent resignations, such as youth minister Sira Rego, who also announced she would not stand. The remaining long-time ministers are Margarita Robles and Fernando Grande-Marlaska, while Defence and Interior ministers plan to run in the Madrid constituency.
