Long-term Financial Strain Linked to Faster Cognitive Decline and Brain Aging
A UCL study found that chronic money problems from early adulthood are associated with poorer cognition at 53 and greater brain shrinkage in later life.
Using the long-running 1946 British cohort, UCL investigators examined how persistent financial hardship across adulthood influences brain health. Participants who fell into the lowest income quintile at least twice, or who repeatedly reported difficulty making ends meet, scored lower on verbal memory and processing-speed tests at age 53. Brain imaging of a later subgroup revealed increased atrophy and ventricular expansion in their late 60s, indicating accelerated aging.
These associations remained even when researchers controlled for early-life cognition, schooling and socioeconomic background. The detrimental pattern was most pronounced for men, people who experienced childhood disadvantage, and those carrying the APOE-ε4 allele linked to Alzheimer’s risk. The authors suggest chronic stress, inflammation and constant mental load from money worries may underlie the observed decline.
