Louisiana fixes voter database mistake, restores 67,000 active registrations

A database glitch temporarily marked about 67,000 Louisiana voters as inactive, but the state corrected the error and reinstated their active status.

A routine database update on Monday night mistakenly reclassified around 67,000 Louisiana voters as inactive. The error, attributed to human oversight, was identified and corrected later that day, with all affected individuals restored to active status, according to deputy secretary of state Trey Williams. Williams clarified that the temporary change does not affect a voter’s right to cast a ballot, as an inactive label does not cancel registration.

The office did not disclose the specific action that caused the change nor provide a parish-by-parish breakdown of those impacted. Additional internal safeguards have been added, though details were not given. Voters are encouraged to check their registration information via the Geauxvote portal or app before the next election.

Why it matters

Ensuring accurate voter rolls is essential for confidence in upcoming elections.
