Low Danube water levels force massive cargo cancellations and disrupt shipping
Severe low water on the Danube has halted river traffic, leading to the cancellation of a large volume of freight shipments.
The Danube's water level fell to -106 centimetres at the Paks gauge, prompting navigation restrictions. Attila Bencsik of the Magyar Hajózási Szövetség noted that the reduced depth has already forced the cancellation of a substantial amount of cargo, comparable to tens of thousands of trucks. The low water is expected to persist in the short term as forecasts predict little rain in the river basins.
Why it matters
Disruptions on the Danube affect supply chains and trade across Central Europe.
