Lowell High baseball team loses three wins and coaches after alleged racist chants

Lowell High School’s championship varsity baseball team has been ordered to surrender three victories and overhaul its coaching roster after a probe into alleged racist taunts during a May game versus Lincoln High School. Witnesses on social media reported that spectators from Lowell made monkey sounds and shouted “Build a wall!” at Black and Latino players on the field. The San Francisco section of the California Interscholastic Federation confirmed the forfeits and mandated a sportsmanship training program.

District officials declined to disclose any player sanctions, citing privacy laws, but pledged accountability and restorative actions for affected students. Head coach Michael Sera, in his first season, along with two assistant coaches, were suspended and Sera was removed from his physical-education teaching role. The school will appoint an interim coach and begin a search for a permanent head coach by the next season.
