Lucas Braathen wins Sölden opening, strengthens overall World Cup lead

Olympic champion Lucas Pinheiro Braathen captured the shortened giant slalom in Sölden, edging out Loic Meillard and Marco Odermatt.

In Sölden, Olympic gold-medalist Lucas Pinheiro Braathen repeated his 2020 success by winning the opening giant slalom of the World Cup season on a shortened track. He beat Loic Meillard (+0.48) and Marco Odermatt (+0.49) despite the race being altered by strong wind gusts. Austrian Raphael Haaser surged from 20th after the first run to fourth overall, posting the fastest second run, while Stefan Brennsteiner fell to eleventh and Patrick Feurstein finished tenth. Joshua Sturm placed 17th, marking the fourth Austrian in the points. Former runner-up Marco Schwarz was eliminated in the first run.

Why it matters

The win positions Braathen as a front-runner for the overall World Cup title early in the season.
