Lula Highlights Brazil's Mixed Environmental Record Amid Deforestation Gains and Oil Growth

In a speech on 10 June at the Planalto Palace, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asserted that Brazil has become a leading example of environmental stewardship. He highlighted actions taken since his inauguration, such as establishing a ministry for indigenous peoples, intensifying raids on illegal gold mining, restoring a dedicated Amazon protection fund and reactivating previously stalled environmental bodies. Satellite observations indicate a substantial reduction in the area of Amazon forest cleared each year, contrasting with a continued rise in national oil production.

Lula also pointed to Brazil's growing influence in global climate policy, referencing the November 2025 COP30 in Belem, the launch of the Tropical Forest Forever Facility, and a roadmap for a gradual phase-out of fossil fuels. Climate governance experts praised the administration's integration of environmental concerns into foreign policy and regional cooperation among Amazonian nations.
