Lula maintains edge over Flavio Bolsonaro as poll shows narrowed gap

A new Datafolha poll released after the campaign launch shows President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva still ahead of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, with the margin now within the survey’s error range.

Datafolha’s most recent poll, the first issued after the official campaign period began, surveyed 2,058 adults starting on August 18. In a hypothetical second-round contest, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva would obtain 47% of the vote compared with Senator Flavio Bolsonaro’s 43%, a gap that lies within the poll’s two-point error margin. For a first-round scenario, Lula leads with 39% of respondents, Bolsonaro follows at 33%, and the remaining candidates—Ronaldo Caiado, Renan Santos and Romeu Zema—collect between three and five percent each.

The data shows the gap between the two front-runners has tightened by one point since July, when Lula was at 48% and Bolsonaro at 43%. The poll’s release coincides with the start of the legal campaign period, when candidates may openly seek votes.
