Luxury $9.1 million superyacht capsizes off Sardinia shortly after delivery

Four days after its handover, the 98-foot superyacht Angiola II, valued at $9.1 million, began taking on water in the Mediterranean Sea following an engine malfunction that sparked a fire. The incident occurred off Porto Cervo, a popular resort on Sardinia’s coast, with fourteen occupants - ten guests and four crew members - aboard. The vessel capsized and slowly sank, but all passengers were rescued without injury, thanks to assistance from a nearby ship and the prompt response of Italian authorities.

The owner, described as an Italian businessman, and one other passenger were the last to leave the yacht, awaiting official evacuation. The wreck has been secured on the ocean floor to prevent drift, and officials noted that no fuel appears to have leaked. The Italian Coast Guard has opened an investigation, and a 220-ton pontoon is being prepared to recover the yacht.
