Luxury expedition yachts launch ultra-exclusive voyages to remote corners of the globe
High-end cruise operators are debuting small, ice-class vessels that whisk affluent travelers to isolated spots such as Aldabra Atoll and Greenland’s Scoresby Sund, promising unique experiences with minimal environmental impact.
A new segment of luxury expedition cruising is targeting a niche of price-insensitive travelers who have already visited iconic sites such as Antarctica. Aqua Expeditions’ ice-class superyacht Aqua Lares will carry up to 30 guests between East Africa and the Arctic, with stops at the UNESCO-listed Aldabra Atoll, home to hundreds of thousands of giant tortoises. Lindblad Expeditions, in partnership with National Geographic, is adding a Society Islands and Tuamotus itinerary that includes Makatea, renowned for its limestone cliffs and hidden grottoes.
Selar plans to launch the near-zero-emission Captain Arctic for its Untamed Greenland voyage, using wind-powered sails and solar panels to navigate the remote Scoresby Sund fjord system and visit Inuit communities. Company leaders Francesco Galli Zugaro, Trey Byus and Sophie Galvagnon stress that the appeal lies in intimate, off-the-beaten-path experiences—snorkeling with whale sharks, hiking to jellyfish lakes, and tracking polar bears—delivered with luxury comforts and a focus on sustainability.
