Lviv Court Hands Life Sentence to Young Man for Killing Former Lawmaker Iryna Farion
A Lviv court sentenced 20-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko to life imprisonment for the murder of former lawmaker and linguist Iryna Farion.
On October 1, the Shevchenko District Court of Lviv sentenced 20-year-old Vyacheslav Zinchenko to life imprisonment for the fatal shooting of Iryna Farion, a well-known linguist and former Ukrainian lawmaker. Farion, aged 60, was shot in the head near her residence on July 19, 2024, and succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts. Authorities arrested Zinchenko in Dnipro on July 25, 2024, after a nationwide manhunt, and he remained in custody until the trial commenced in January 2025.
Prosecutors argued that the motive was Farion’s public advocacy for the Ukrainian language, which the suspect claimed discriminated against Russian-speaking citizens. The pre-trial investigation involved more than 60 expert examinations, questioning of over 1,500 individuals, and extensive analysis of surveillance footage. During the proceedings, Zinchenko declined to give testimony, leading the judge to describe his conduct as an abuse of procedural rights. Public reaction included tributes from figures such as former President Viktor Yushchenko, who emphasized Farion’s dedication to Ukrainian cultural identity.
