Maastricht university suspends student after controversial Hamas-related video

Universiteit Maastricht announced a provisional suspension of a Gaza-origin student after he posted a video on social media claiming personal participation in Hamas attacks in Israel. In the clip, filmed inside a student house, he points to a news segment and declares, “This is me.” University officials warned that the post could cause unrest and therefore removed the student from all academic activities pending a review of conditions for his continued enrollment.

The institution stressed it lacks authority to probe the video's background or the poster’s identity. The student entered the Netherlands after the university submitted a request for a temporary residence permit, which the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst granted. He maintains a sizable Instagram following, where he shares freerunning videos and occasional content with jihadist gestures, as well as a tribute to his deceased brother Ahmed.
