MacKenzie Scott's $30 million gift fuels a decade-long affordable-housing push in the Bay Area
MacKenzie Scott, via her Yield Giving fund, contributed $30 million to Housing Trust Silicon Valley, which has outlined a 10-year plan to expand affordable homes across the Bay Area.
Through her Yield Giving philanthropic vehicle, MacKenzie Scott donated $30 million to Housing Trust Silicon Valley, marking the biggest single individual contribution the nonprofit has ever received. The unrestricted funds are intended to strengthen the trust’s revolving loan pool, scale current housing programs and launch new efforts aimed at equity and affordability throughout the 14-county Bay Area. In September 2025 the trust unveiled a comprehensive 10-year strategy that channels the gift into accelerated lending, expanded first-time-homebuyer assistance, policy innovation and new financing products tailored to developers’ needs.
Leaders such as CEO Noni Ramos and board chair Joe Anzalone highlighted the timing as the organization approaches its 25-year anniversary, noting past investments of $615 million that created over 27,200 homes. Early outcomes include a $2 million pre-development loan for Meridian Apartments in Sunnyvale and a $4 million loan for the Vivalon senior-housing project in San Rafael. By the 2025 annual report, total investments had risen to more than $690 million, supporting roughly 53,800 residents, with the new plan set to build on that momentum.
Why it matters
