Macron asks EU to ease fuel rules to curb rising pump prices
President Emmanuel Macron sent a letter to the European Commission seeking relaxed fuel standards and other measures to lower gasoline and diesel costs in France.
Ahead of announcing new domestic aid, President Emmanuel Macron wrote to EU officials requesting adjustments to European fuel regulations to ease price pressures. He highlighted five initiatives, such as relaxing quality standards for kerosene and diesel to boost refinery output, with expected efficiency gains of 5-20 %. Macron also advocated raising the biofuel blend limit from B7 to B10, which could cut diesel use by about 3 % if approved by car manufacturers. Additionally, he asked for a one-year postponement of the EU methane-reporting rule for oil, gas and coal importers and called for stronger joint gas purchases and accelerated electrification efforts.
